Dear Summerfield Families,

Welcome to Summerfield Elementary School! It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the principal of this incredible school. After serving as assistant principal at Summerfield for the past four and a half years, I am grateful for the opportunity to continue partnering with our students, families, staff, and community as we build on the strong traditions that make Summerfield such a special place.

Summerfield is more than where I work. It is home. My family has been part of this community for many years. My daughter attended Summerfield from kindergarten through fifth grade, my son is a proud Summerfield Viking, and my husband serves our community through the Greensboro Fire Department and as a volunteer firefighter with the Summerfield Fire District. This school has played an important role in our family's life, making it a privilege to now serve as your principal.

Before joining Summerfield, I taught fourth and fifth grade, served as a curriculum facilitator, and worked as a district data coach. Those experiences reinforced my belief that students thrive when they receive high-quality instruction, build meaningful relationships, and are supported by strong partnerships between school and home.

Together, we have so much to celebrate. Our school has exceeded academic growth for two consecutive years, earned an "A" school performance grade, expanded STEM opportunities, and strengthened our focus on developing student leaders.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to growing strong readers, developing confident student leaders, and helping students take ownership of their learning. My goal is simple: to ensure every child is challenged, supported, and inspired each day they walk through our doors.

Kevin Conaway, Assistant Principal

Welcome to Summerfield Elementary!

It is a privilege to join the Summerfield Elementary community as Assistant Principal for the 2026–2027 school year. I look forward to partnering with our students, families, staff, and community as we continue to provide an exceptional learning experience for every child.

My wife, Merrie, and I have been happily married for nearly 25 years. She serves as the principal at Kiser Middle School, so education has always been a central part of our family's life. We are blessed with three wonderful children. Our oldest son, Charlie, is a second-year junior at UNC Charlotte, where he is pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Our daughter, Maggie, is a rising senior at Grimsley High School and spends much of her time pursuing her passion for competitive dance. Our youngest, Thomas, is a rising eighth grader at Kiser Middle School.

I have proudly served Guilford County Schools since 1998. My career began as a Social Studies teacher and soccer coach at Grimsley High School before serving in district leadership as a Formative Assessment Specialist and Regional Formative Assessment Coach. In 2013, I became Assistant Principal at Southeast Guilford Middle School and was honored to serve as Principal from 2018 to 2026.

I am passionate about helping every student grow academically, socially, and emotionally. At Summerfield, I look forward to supporting strong literacy instruction, developing confident student leaders, and ensuring that every child is challenged, supported, and inspired each day.

I am excited to meet our families and work together to make this an outstanding school year. Welcome to Summerfield Elementary—we are glad you are here!
